Since I collect students’ exams and do not return them, they need to come during my office hours to review their exams. Today, the last day of the semester before finals, a student asked to look at her exam. I told her that the semester is over; there are no more office hours. But, feeling especially kind, I told her that I would be in my office the next day, a Friday, between 2 and 3pm if she would like to look at her exam at that time. She replied “I’m not on campus on Fridays”, as if it were my responsibility to make this as convenient for her as possible. I proceeded to tell her that if she found me in my office next week, she could look at her exam, but I wasn’t sure of my schedule. “Well, I have to sew all weekend” she replied. “My design is due on Monday so I’m going to be working on that the entire weekend, so yeah, Tuesday will probably be good for me”.
Dear student, Contrary to what you seem to believe, you are NOT doing me a favor by interrupting me so you can look at your exam because you were too lazy to do so when you supposed to. I will now be working from home or at the library next week specifically to avoid you.

Avoidance - the ultimate revenge! Her feeling of entitlement is so NOT surprising.
ReplyDeleteExcellent. Now I know where to find you!
